about

International supergroup Symbol & The Sound is the passion project of vocalist Michael Tellbach, producer Nathaniel Ritter and multi-instrumentalist Troy Schafer. World We Know / Oblivion is their stunning debut EP of New Romantic and Post-Punk revelry. Working together like parallel singles, each featuring complementary remixes (by Burial Hex and Auscultation respectively), these two songs make for a fascinating first glimpse into the vivid and evocative world of Symbol & The Sound. Michael Tellbach (also known for his work as Art Abscons) croons and broods with a swagger like Bryan Ferry, yet maintaining a pensive distance reminiscent of David Sylvian. Tellbach is punctuated and backed by the sumptuous voice of Jessica Way (Barren Harvest, Worm Ouroboros). All the while, Nathaniel Ritter and Troy Schafer (the same pair that bore hallucinatory triumphs like Wreathes and Kinit Her) indulge deeply in a technicolored reimagining of pop history, and delicately balance their cinematic nostalgia with a sense of endless future horizons, to craft these sophisticated dance-floor ballads. Much more than just mood and rhythm, Ritter's hermetic lyrics lift these songs out of the mundane and hint at a deeper understanding of human relations, and the archetypal mediums through which we express ourselves.
RIYL Tears For Fears, Spandau Ballet, Talk Talk, ABC, and Peter Gabriel.
